Fireplace Mantels: A curated collection or just random stuff?

Using the mirror as the focal point, the other layered elements attempt to create a visual balance.

Fireplaces and their mantels can be the focal point of a room. However, they can also be a place to collect a bunch of haphazard things that don’t really belong together. Sometimes the best way to style or re-style a fireplace mantel is to completely empty it and keep it clean for a few days. After getting used to the still and clean space, slowly add in a few curated design elements. Only add pieces that you absolutely love. (These special pieces can also be rotated with the seasons to keep the area feeling fresh) You will want to carefully select and present each piece so it reflects you {and your family}.

Use your mantel as a way to celebrate the color palette of your home, upcoming seasons, or keep it neutral.

What is your focal point?

Look at the images below. Pay attention to each one. What is the focal point of each mantel? Sometimes it can be a mirror, a large image, and even a television.

Keep in mind the varying heights of the objects. Even if the items used on both sides are not the same, you still want to create an overall look of visual symmetry. For example, A tall object on one side of the mantel will balance out another object with a similar height located on the other side.

Lastly, consider how things are layered. Does everything need to be equally spaced, or is there room to play around with design elements? It is possible to create depth in such a small area. Play around with different types of materials (wood, stone, ceramic, plant/organic, and metal) to add different textures to your mantel.
