Chalkboards: Painted & Framed

Use a cute frame {any decorative frame will do) and add a little hardboard and chalkboard paint to create your own chalkboards.

Materials

  • large wooden frame
  • 1/4″ hard board cut to fit in frame (Lazy Tip: You can have it cut at your local hardware store)
  • 1-2 inch brush
  • small paint roller
  • paint tray (optional really)
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Petroleum Jelly
  • E6000 Glue (If your frame doesn’t have little clip things to hold the board in place)

When you buy the hardboard, it is often in a large sheet. You will need to either cut this yourself, or have your dimensions ready to have the boards cut at the store. Make sure your board fits just inside the frame. There needs to be enough board overlap if you are going to glue it in place like I did.

After you cut the board to fit, make sure you wipe clean before you paint.  I didn’t prime the boards, but you could if you want to.

Paint Tray Optional

I started with the intention of using a paint tray, but I ended up not using it. { By brushing then rolling, I got great results with less clean up}

*Use the brush and brush on some paint directly from the can.

*Then use your small foam roller to smooth out the paint strokes.

*You will need to do at least 2 coats.

*Let dry overnight

After its dry, I like to coat with chalk and wipe away…and then write something to “test” it out.

The next step involves gluing the board to the frame. I just put a small line of glue around the entire edge of the frame.

After gluing, place some lightweight books around edge and let dry overnight again.

Sticky Tip
This is where the jelly comes into play..you were wondering, right?
Just put some on the glue tip to keep the cap from sticking!

Chalkboard Placemats

You can also create “chalkboard place mats” using the same technique. Without the frame they sit flat. I just like to add little Scratch Free Feet (The kind that go on the legs of chairs) if the place mat will sit on a scratch-able surface.

My kids “helped” me with the homeschooling list of daily ideas…Have you pooped today? 🙂
